Although we tried to assemble a chondro-free herd from the start, there was no test at the time, and breeders were slow to recognize that the mutation could be bred-out of a herd. Sometimes a particularly proporationate chondro carrier could pass as “just-stocky.” In several cases, these well-built drawves were detected in our herd because they produced wildly different calves from year to year. Marigold was one of our early steps in the direction we were trying to go, clearly chondro-free, and allowing us to use her bloodlines in our program. From here, we bred for a stockier, more typey, non-chondro Dexter. Marigold’s lines are still in the herd we maintain today.
